Born in Pennsylvania in 1947, future creative genius Thomas Mann saw beauty in machinery and metals from a young age. While still in high school, he began an apprenticeship in silversmithing while working in a jewelry studio in Allentown. Noteworthy, the budding jeweler’s unique pieces helped him pay for his art education at East Stroudsburg University.
After graduating in 1970, Mann worked as a self-employed jewelry designer and operated studios in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. Experimenting with assembly techniques and combining various metals with plastic and found objects, he developed his signature Techno-Romantic® style. His vintage steampunk jewelry pieces traditionally feature highly detailed, humorous steampunk designs, hand-signed by Mann and the TM trademark on the back.
Remarkably, 77-year-old Thomas Mann is still in business on Magazine Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he founded a jewelry and sculpture studio and the Thomas Mann Gallery in 1982. Featured in numerous articles and books, the metal artist has won numerous awards, and his work graces art museums nationally and internationally.
